Used Games Hurting the Industry?

Yes they are according to analyst group Cowen and Company.

The industry is once again seeing declining sales in software even going as far as to compare software sales with last-gen. A whopping 20% from last-gen actually. Many people aren’t buying games new anymore due to the higher price of video games.

Used retailers like Gamestop offer games at a cheaper price if they are bought used. The problem? Used items are not counted towards GDP as all of the money spent on the product goes straight into the resellers pocket rather than that of the publishers and developers. This also stops it from being counted in the NPD.

Cowen and Company and many other groups have showed favor towards EA’s new “Play Pass” which they hope will lessen the impact that used game sales are having on the industry.

Do you agree with the analysts? Do you agree with the Play Pass?
