Ubisoft has formally lifted the curtain on the next chapter in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Dubbed Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, the game sees the return of Assassin’s Creed II protagonist Ezio Auditore.

In Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, players will travel to Rome, to face off against Rodrigo Borgia’s – now the pope – son, Cesare Borgia. Though, Ezio will quickly learn that he can’t win this battle alone, leading him to reunite the Brotherhood anew.

In addition to its single-player campaign, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood will also feature, for the first time, a multiplayer component. The twist is that within the multiplayer, the player assumes the role of their very own Assassin, allowing them to define their very own kill style.

GameStop has already confirmed that those who pre-order the game will receive exclusive multiplayer characters. It’s likely other retails will follow suit.

Assassin’s Creed II released in November 2009 too much praise from both critics and consumers, of whom praised it for fixing many of the problems that existed with its predessecor. It certainly isn’t surprising that Ubisoft would attempt to put forth another game within such a time span, with Assassin’s Creed II selling more than 1.6 million units within its first week at retail.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood will release this year on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.
