Diablo III Bestiary Update: The Fallen Ones

The Diablo 3 Bestiary now features not one, not two, but five new creatures from the realm of Sanctuary: the Fallen Ones.

"The fallen ones are a unique breed of true demonic origin, one of the few that I've been able to conclusively verify through sources other than the ancient Vizjerei tomes in my possession. (How I came by said tomes will, of necessity, remain my secret.)"

Goodbye 3D Realms

3D Realms/Apogee Software has closed sad.gif

Fan Goodbye video

Edit:

3D Realms are still planning to release their unfinished game as they today released a press statement that they aren't closing!

"While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise", said one of the developers.

Last week 3D Realms announced their closure because of financial reasons, which was followed by an accusation from Take-Two claiming that they owed them millions of dollars. Take-Two filed a lawsuit again 3D Realms and their claims were denied by the court.

Take-Two offered 3D Realms a last minute offer to buy the full rights to the work-in-progress but was denied. The lawsuit was seen as a bullying tactic to acquire the game but it appears that 3D Realms have successfully bounced back.

Much better! biggrin.gif

You'll play one of these "regular" people who must suddenly become a hero in order to survive. Players will be able to start in one of three cities, New York, London, or Seoul, and travel between them, go to new areas throughout the world, etc. Basically what you'd expect from any MMORPG. What you might not expect, is that the game won't involve levels, or an "end game." As Funcom put it, they want people to be able to hope into the game, and instantly adventure with friends who have been playing for months, without holding them back as a surefire liability.

Welcome to the secret world of our reality. Ever wondered what the government was hiding from us and what kind of powers we wield? Then this MMORPG is for you. Don't let that type of game steer you away from this game. Why? Even if it is an MMO, it has been promised that there are no levels; meaning no grind. Instead of going around killing the same creature x amount of times, you get to use your own preferred skills in this wonderful dark world of ours.

Oh? Right, you play in a "what if" scenario of our world where the secrets that have been revealed with mythological, conspiracy theories, folklore, sci-fi and fictional mysteries roam around this virtual world. You get to start off in London, Seoul, or New York and travel around doing quests while fending off the darkness. Great right? Not yet, more coming. You can also choose your preferred skills (i.e fire sword or cold ice shotgun). Depending on what they let you choose as skills, that is what you can wield. Love customization? Well, you get to also choose what clothing you want; from goth, American western, Asian, metal, and anything else (the developers) decide to add to the wonderful world. Of course you need something to fight with so you can of course choose your weapon of choice. No need to start up a character or delete your previous one since you can change your character "on-the-fly". Hooked?

Ok, and if you do play then what is the main point? Just act like yourself, or someone you wished to be, doing quests and puzzles. Already doing that? OK, well what about experimenting with the powers you wished for in our own reality in the game? That should suit your fancy, even if for awhile.

As long as this MMO provides replayability and actually listens to the fans then I can see it living as long as Guild Wars and WoW put together. Maybe I'm forgetting the obvious and that this MMO should also have a nice open ended world as well so that replayability is even possible.

Edit:

QUOTE
Right now, "The Secret World" is planned for 360 and PC, and both versions will remain unique; so no playing on a PC with your 360 pals. The developers are trying to keep the games basically the same, but obviously issues of control, chat, etc. will differ. One thing that they did make clear is that, since some people will prefer to use controllers given the realtime, skill-oriented combat, the PC version will offer full Xbox 360 controller support, and settings to make it play just fine with one.

With all this favouritism/fanboyism going on within the game industry, we keep seeing games getting hurt just because someone wanted something one way and it could of easily went on any others. What I mean is Universe at War using Live because of the 360 hype/fanboyism. Developers should learn to generalize their device supports and other supports. Well, thats my personal opinion at least.

Steam's "Custom Executable Generation"

posted by Dampkring on March 25th, 2009

>> According to an announcement made by Valve today, Steamworks will feature a new toolkit, free of charge, to all developers and publishers. In this toolkit you can find a new technology called "Custom Executable Generation" (CEG) which will be a huge improvement to the already existing anti-piracy solution offered in Steamworks.

CEG should be a "customer friendly approach to anti-piracy, CEG makes unique copies of games for each user allowing them to access the application on multiple machines without install limits and without having to install root kits on their PC." Next to this, it includes support for in-game downloadable content (DLC) and a matchmaking system. The DLC support should help developers to spread their new content, either free or for a fee, and the matchmaking features the lobby system that was already shipped and tested for Left 4 Dead.

"Delivering this extension of services on Steamworks first anniversary, demonstrates our commitment to continually develop the platform to better serve the community working with these tools," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "As we roll out these features, we continue to look for new ways make PC games easier to create and better for customers to experience."

Steamworks is completely integrated within Steam which has distributed PC games to 20 million accounts, growing from 15 million accounts last year, and it offers over 500 applications to gamers all over the world. <<
